Wigglesworth, Mark

Wigglesworth, Mark, English conductor; b. Sussex, July 19, 1964. He was a student of George Hurst at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1989 he captured 1st prize in the Kondrashin competition in the Netherlands; that same year, he became music director of the Premiere Ensemble of London. In 1990 he conducted Don Giovanni with the Opera Factory in London. He subsequently served as its music director (1991-94) and appeared as a guest conductor with principal British orchs. as well as those on the Continent. From 1991 to 1993 he was assoc. conductor of the BBC Sym. Orch. in London. In 1992 he made his U.S. debut as a guest conductor with the Dallas Sym. Orch., and subsequently appeared with the Philadelphia Orch., the Chicago Sym. Orch., the Minn. Orch. in Minneapolis, the St. Louis Sym. Orch., the Los Angeles Phil., and the N.Y. Phil. In 1996 he became music director of the BBC National Orch. of Wales in Cardiff, which position he retained until 2000.
