Wenten Nyoman

Wenten Nyoman Indonesian musician and dancer; b. Sading, near Denpasar, Bali, June 15,1945. He studied dance and music from an early age with his grandfather; continued studies at the National Cons, of Music and Dance in Bali, the Traditional Music Cons, in Surakarta (1962-65), and the National Music and Dance Academy in Yogyakarta (B.F.A., 1970); taught at the latter institutions as well as the Dance Cons, in Yogyakarta (1964-70). He received an M.F.A. from the Calif. Inst. of the Arts (1974); taught there (from 1971) and also gave workshops at both the Los Angeles and Berkeley campuses of the Univ. of Calif. He was director of the Music, Dance, and Language Program for the Indonesian consulate in Los Angeles. He toured in Asia, North America, and Europe (from 1964); appeared at the Los Angeles Olympic Arts Festival (1984) and the International Festival of Arts in Mexico (1985). He is a remarkable performer in both Balinese and Javanese dance and music; he frequently performs with his wife, Nanik, and her father, K. R. T. Wasitodiningrat.
