Ugolini, Vincenzo

Ugolini, Vincenzo, Italian composer; b. Perugia, c. 1580; d. Rome, May 6, 1638. He was a pupil of G.B. Nanino from 1592 to 1594 at the choir school of S. Luigi dei Francesi, Rome, where he was a bass from 1600 and from 1603 to 1609 maestro di cappella at S. Maria Maggiore. From 1610 to 1614 he was at Benevento Cathedral. Returning to Rome, he was director of music to Cardinal Arrigoni (from 1614); from 1616 to 1620, was maestro di cappella at S. Luigi dei Francesi, and from 1620 to 1626 at the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter’s. In 1631 he resumed his former post at S. Luigi dei Francesi, retaining it until his death. He was the teacher of Benevoli. A notable representative of Palestrina’s school, he publ. four books of motets for one to four Voices (1616-19), one book of Psalms for eight Voices and Basso Continuo (1628), one book of Psalms and motets for two Voices and Basso Continuo (1630), two books of madrigals for five Voices (1630), etc.; also other works in contemporary collections.
