Uhi, Alfred

Uhi, Alfred, Austrian composer and pedagogue; b. Vienna, June 5, 1909; d. there, June 8, 1992. He studied composition with Franz Schmidt at the Vienna Academy of Music (diploma, 1932); then in 1940-41, during World War II, was in the Austrian army, where he was severely wounded. In 1943 he became a composition teacher at the Vienna Academy of Music; also served as president of the Austrian copyright society (1970-75). In 1980 he was awarded the Austrian Badge of Honor for Science and Arts. His music was patterned after Classical forms, with emphasis on contrapuntal clarity.
