UhI, Fritz, Austrian tenor; b. Matzleinsdorf, near Vienna, April 2, 1928. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Music (1947-52). In 1952 he made his operatic debut in Graz. In 1957 he made his first appearance at the Bayreuth Festival as Vogelsang, and continued to sing there until 1964. In 1958 he became a member of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where he was made a Kammersänger in 1962. From 1961 he also sang at the Vienna State Opera. He made his debut at London’s Covent Garden as Walther von Stolzing in 1963. In 1968 he sang for the first time at the Salzburg Festival as Florestan, and continued to appear there until 1972. In 1981 he became a prof, at the Vienna Cons. Uhi was particularly known for his Wagnerian portrayals.
