Tolstoy, Dmitri
Tolstoy, Dmitri, Russian composer; b. Berlin, Jan. 20, 1923. He was the son of the writer Alexei Tolstoy, with whom he went to Russia after the latter’s temporary emigration. He studied at the Leningrad Cons., graduating in 1947, and also took courses in composition with Shebalin in Moscow and Shostakovich in Leningrad.

2 operas: Masquerade (1955; Moscow, Jan. 17, 1956) and Mariuta (Perm, Dec. 30, 1960); Poem about Leningrad for Orch. (1953); piano pieces; cantatas; songs.
