Suitner, Otmar

Suitner, Otmar, Austrian conductor; b. Innsbruck, May 16, 1922. He studied piano at the Innsbruck Cons, and then piano with Ledwinka and conducting with Krauss at the Salzburg Mozarteum (1940-42). In 1945 he conducted at the Innsbruck Landestheater; was then music director in Remscheid (1952-57) and Generalmusikdirektor in Ludwigshafen (1957-60). From 1960 to 1964 he served as Generalmusikdirektor of the Dresden State Opera and Dresden State Orch.; from 1964 to 1971, conducted at the East Berlin State Opera, and from 1974 to 1991 was its Generalmusikdirektor. He also conducted in America; was a guest conductor with the San Francisco Opera.
