Sandvold, Arild (Edvin)

Sandvold, Arild (Edvin) , eminent Norwegian organist, choral conductor, teacher, and composer; b. Christiania, June 2, 1895; d. there (Oslo), Aug. 15, 1984. He studied at the Christiania Cons. and with Straube in Leipzig. He made Christiania the center of his activities, where he was active as an organist from 1914, later serving as cathedral organist and subsequently canon at Var Frelsers Church (1933–66). From 1917 to 1969 he taught organ at the Cons. He was conductor of the Caecilia Choral Soc. from 1928 to 1957. In 1956 the Norwegian government awarded him an annual stipend. He composed mainly sacred works, including cantatas. His most ambitious score was his Misjonskantate (Mission Cantata; 1942; orchestrated 1967). He also wrote many organ pieces. Sandvold greatly influenced the course of 20th- century Norwegian sacred music.
