Rimsky-Korsakov, Andrei (Nikolaievich)

Rimsky-Korsakov, Andrei (Nikolaievich) , Russian musicologist, son of Nikolai (Andreievich) Rimsky-Korsakov , and uncle of Georgi (Mikhailovich), Rimsky-Korsakov; b. St. Petersburg, Oct. 17, 1878; d. there (Leningrad), May 23, 1940. He studied philology at the Univ. of St. Petersburg and later at the univs. of Strasbourg and Heidelberg (Ph.D., 1903). Returning to Russia, he devoted his energies to Russian music history. In 1915 he began the publication of an important magazine, Musikalny Sovremennik (The Musical Contemporary), but the revolutionary events of 1917 forced suspension of its publication. He wrote a major biography of his father (5 vols., Moscow, 1933–46; vol. V ed. by his brother, Vladimir Rimsky-Korsakov); also ed. the 3rd to 5th eds. of his father’s autobiography (Moscow, 1926, 1932, 1935) and publ. a study of Maximilian Steinberg (Moscow, 1928). He was married to Julia Weissberg .
