Randegger, Alberto Sr.

Randegger, Alberto Sr. , Italian conductor, organist, teacher, and composer, uncle of Alberto Randegger Jr. ; b. Trieste, April 13, 1832; d. London, Dec. 18, 1911. He studied piano and composition in Italy. After working as a music director in Italian theaters, he settled in London (1854) and gained distinction as a conductor, singing teacher, and composer; was also organist at St. Paul’s in Regent’s Park (1854–70). He conducted at the Wolverhampton (from 1868) and Norwich (1881–1905) festivals, with the Carl Rosa Opera Co. (1879–85), at Drury Lane and Covent Garden (1887–98), and at the Queen’s Hall (1895–97); was a prof. of singing at the Royal Academy of Music (from 1868) and later at the Royal Coll. of Music. He publ. the manual Singing (London, 1893). His compositions include the operas Bianca Capello (Brescia, 1854) and The Rival Beauties (Leeds, 1864), a dramatic cantata, Fridolin (1873), sacred music, and songs.
