Popov, Alexander

Popov, Alexander , Bulgarian composer; b. Kolarovgrad, July 14, 1927. He studied composition with Veselin Stoyanov at the Bulgarian State Cons., graduating in 1954. He played viola in the orch. of the National Opera in Sofia, and was a member of the Sofia Soloists chamber ensemble.

ORCH .: Suite (1956); Native Land, variations (1958); The Artist, suite for String Quartet and String Orch. (1961); Sinfonietta (1964); Concerto Grosso for Strings (1966); Prelude and Dance (1972); Adagio (1973); Variants for 13 Strings (1973). CHAMBER : 2 string quartets. VOCAL : 2 cantatas: Cantata about the April Uprising (1952) and Land of Songs (1969); choruses; songs.
