Platti, Giovanni Benedetto

Platti, Giovanni Benedetto , Italian composer; b. Padua, July 9, 1697; d. Würzburg, Jan. 11, 1763. In 1722 he went to Würzburg, where he was active as an instrumentalist, tenor, singing teacher, and composer at the court of the bishops until at least 1761.


DRAMATIC: Opera: Arianna (Würzburg, 1729). VOCAL : 2 oratorios; Requiem; 6 masses; cantatas; etc. INSTRUMENTAL (all publ. in Nuremberg): 6 sonates pour la clavessin sur le goût italien, op.1 (1742; ed. in Istituzioni e Monumenti dell’Arte Musicale Italiana, VII, 1941, and Mitteldeutsches Musikarchiv, 1st series, III-IV, Leipzig, 1957); 6 Concerti for Harpsichord and Strings, op.1 (1742); 6 Sonate for Flute and Cello, op.3 (1743?); 6 Sonate for Harpsichord, op.4 (c. 1746; ed. in Mitteldeutsches Musikarchiv, 1st series, III-IV , Leipzig, 1957); 5 concertos for Harpsichord and Strings; 28 cello concertos; Oboe Concerto; 21 sonatas for Violin, Cello, and Bass.
