Pitfield, Thomas B(aron)
Pitfield, Thomas B(aron) , English composer, teacher, artist, and writer; b. Bolton, April 5, 1903; d. Nov. 11, 1999. He was educated at the Royal Manchester Coll. of Music and the Bolton School of Arts. He taught at Tettenhall Coll. (1935–45) and the Royal Manchester Coll. of Music (1947–72), and finally at the latter’s successor, the Royal Northern Coll. of Music (1972–73). In addition to his musical interests, he also was active as an artist and writer. He publ. 2 autobiographical vols., No Song, No Supper (1986) and A Song After Supper (1991). His compositions were in a simple style, and included dramatic scores, orch. works, brass band pieces, chamber music, piano pieces, and choral works.
