Petri, Michala

Petri, Michala,gifted Danish recorder player; b. Copenhagen, July 7, 1958. She began to play at the incredible age of 3 and appeared on Danish radio when she was 5. She made her concert debut as a soloist in Copenhagen in 1969. Petri formed a trio with her mother, a harpsichordist, and her cellist brother, and toured widely with it. She studied with Ferdinand Conrad at the Hannover Staatliche Hochschule für Musik (1970–76). In addition to chamber music performances, she toured extensively as a soloist. She made her U.S. debut with N.Y.’s 92nd Street Y Chamber Orch. in 1982, and first played in Japan in 1984. In 2000 she was awarded the Léonie Sonning Music Prize of Denmark. Her repertoire ranges from the early Baroque era to contemporary music; she has commissioned a number of composers to write works for her.
