Petri, Johann Samuel
Petri, Johann Samuel,German composer and writer on music, nephew ofGeorg Gottfried Petri; b. Sorau, Nov. 1, 1738; d. Bautzen, April 12, 1808. He taught himself to play several instruments. After teaching music at the Pädagogium in Halle (1762–63), he was Kantor and schoolteacher in Lauben (1763–70) and Bautzen (from 1770). He composed several passion cantatas and many works for chorus and orch., and publ, the treatise Anleitung zur practischen Musik, vor neuangehende Sänger und Instrumentspieler (Lauban, 1767; 2nd ed., Aug. 1782).
