Nielsen, Riccardo

Nielsen, Riccardo, Italian composer and administrator; b. Bologna, March 3, 1908; d. Ferrara, Jan. 30, 1982. He studied with Casella and Gatti. He served as director of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna (1946–50). In 1952 he became director of the Liceo Musicale (later Cons.) in Ferrara. In his early works, he was influenced by Casella. He later wrote in a 12-tone idiom, which eventually evolved into a post-Webern style.
