Morelli (real name, Zanelli), Carlo

Morelli (real name, Zanelli), Carlo, Chilean baritone; b. Valparaiso (of an Italian father and a Chilean mother), Dec. 25,1897; d. Mexico City, May 12,1970. He studied voice in Bologna with Angelo Queize and in Florence with Leopoldo Mugnone. He sang at La Scala, Milan (1922); toured South America (1925–31). He made his first U.S. appearence with the Chicago Opera in 1932, making his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. on Dec. 21, 1935, as Marcello. He remained there until 1940, and then sang with the San Carlo Opera at the City Center, N.Y. (1940–49). In 1949 he settled in Mexico.
