Moreira, António Leal
Moreira, António Leal, Portuguese composer; b. Abrantes, 1758; d. Lisbon, Nov. 21, 1819. He studied with João de Sousa Carvalho at the Lisbon Seminario Patriarcal, becoming his assistant in 1775. In 1787 he was appointed mestre de capela of the royal chapel, then served as music director of the Italian Opera Theater (1790–93) and the Teatro San Carlo (1793–1800) in Lisbon. He composed numerous stage works, his opera buffa II disertore francese being given at the Turin Carnival in 1800. Other works include 4 masses, 2 Magnificats, and 5 villancicos.
