Laurence, Elizabeth, English mezzo-soprano; b. Harrogate, Nov. 22, 1949. She studied at the Trinity Coll. of Music in London, and then pursued a concert career in Europe. In 1986 she sang Stravinsky’s Jocasta at the Madrid Opera. She appeared in the premiere of Osborne’s The Electrification of the Soviet Union at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1987. In 1988 she sang in the rev. version of Boulez’s Le visage nuptial at Milan’s La Scala and appeared as Fricka in Das Rheingold in Paris. Her debut at London’s Covent Garden followed in 1989 in the British premiere of Berio’s Un re in Ascolto, where she returned in 1991 to sing in the premiere of Birtwist-le’s Gawain. In 1989 she also sang in the premiere of Holler’s Der Meister und Margarita in Paris. She was engaged to sing in the premiere of Osborne’s Terrible Mouth in London in 1992. In 1993 she sang at the Salzburg Festival, returning there in 1996. In 1998 she appeared in Lulu in Paris.
