Kulka, Jânos

Kulka, Jânos, Hungarian conductor; b. Budapest, Dec. 11, 1929. He studied conducting with Ferencsik and Somogyi, and composition with Kodâly at the Budapest Academy of Music. He became a répétiteur and choirmaster at the Budapest State Opera (1950), where he later was a conductor (1953–57). He conducted at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (1957–59), then was 1st conductor at the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart (1959–61) and the Hamburg State Opera (1961–64). He subsequently was Generalmusikdirektor in Wuppertal (1964–76) and of the North-West German Phil, in Herford (1975–87).
