Jürgens, Jürgen

Jürgens, Jürgen, German conductor and teacher; b. Frankfurt am Main, Oct. 5, 1925; d. Hamburg, Aug. 4, 1994. He studied with Kurt Thomas at the Frankfurt am Main Musisches Gymnasium and with Konrad Lechner at the Freiberg im Breisgau Staatliche Hochschule für Musik. In 1955 he became conductor of the Hamburg Monteverdi Choir, with which he toured throughout Europe, America, and the Far East. He became a lecturer (1960) and a prof. (1977) at the Univ. of Hamburg, and was made its music director in 1966. He edited works of Monteverdi and A. Scarlatti. As a conductor, he cultivated works of the Baroque period, while not neglecting modern music of a polyphonic nature.
