Jebe, Halfdan, Norwegian violinist and composer; b. Trondheim, 1868?; d. Mexico City, Dec. 17, 1937. After training in Christiania and Leipzig, he studied with Joachim (violin) in Berlin and with Massenet (composition) in Paris. He played in the Colonne Orch. in Paris (1894–97), and then was conductor of the Central Theater in Christiania (1897–98). He became a close friend of Delius, and was the first to conduct his music in England (London, May 30, 1899). His works reflect both his Norwegian heritage and his adopted country of Mexico. He wrote several operas, including Vesle Kari Rud (1904–05) and Dignidad Maya (1932–33), ballets, orch. pieces, much chamber music, piano pieces, and songs.
