Hutchens, Frank

Hutchens, Frank, New Zealand pianist, teacher, and composer; b. Christchurch, Jan. 15, 1892; d. Sydney, Australia, Oct. 18, 1965. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Matthay (piano) and Corder (composition); taught there from 1908 to 1914; in 1915 he was appointed a prof, at the New South Wales State Conservatorium in Sydney. In 1962 he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. His compositions include Ballade for Orch. (1938), Concerto for 2 Pianos and Orch. (1940), Air Mail Palestine for Voice and Orch. (1942), and piano pieces.
