Hutchings, Arthur (James Bramwell)
Hutchings, Arthur (James Bramwell), English musicologist; b. Sunbury-on-Thames, July 14, 1906; d. Colyton, Devon, Nov. 13, 1989. He studied violin and piano; later received his Ph.D. from the Univ. of Durham (1953), where he was prof, of music (1947–68) and then at the Univ. of Exeter (1968–71). His books, all publ. in London, include Schubert (1945; 4th ed., 1973),Delius (1948),A Companion to Mozart’s Piano Concertos (1948; 3rd ed., 1980),The Invention and Composition of Music (1958),The Baroque Concerto (1961; 3rd ed., rev., 1973),Church Music in the Nineteenth Century (1967),Mozart: The Manf the Musician (1976),and Purcell (1982).
