Herpol, Homer (Latinized as Homerus Herpolitanus)
Herpol, Homer (Latinized as Homerus Herpolitanus), South Netherlands composer; b. St. Omer, c. 1520; d. Konstanz, between Dec. 12, 1573 and Jan. 8, 1574. He was active as a cleric. In 1554 he became cantor at the collegiate church of St. Nikolaus in Fri-bourg. He then went to Germany and studied with Heinrich Glarean in Freiburg im Breigau (1555-57). In 1569 he became Informator choralium at Kostanz Cathedral. His most significant achievement was a vol. of 54 motets on the Gospel texts of the ecclesiastical year publ, as Novum et insigne opus musicum (Nuremberg, 1565). Among his other works were 7 Magnificats, motets, a Salve regina, and a Regina coeli.
