Fitzenhagen, (Karl Friedrich) Wilhelm

Fitzenhagen, (Karl Friedrich) Wilhelm, minent German cellist and pedagogue; b. Seesen, Sept. 15, 1848; d. Moscow, Feb. 14, 1890. He studied piano, violin, and cello in his youth, and then cello with Plock and Theodore Müller, and finally with Grützmacher in Dresden (1867–68). He subsequently was a member of the Hofkapelle there. In 1870 he went to Moscow, where he became prof, of cello at the Imperial Cons.; thereafter gained great renown as a virtuoso and teacher. Tchaikovsky composed his Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello and orch. for him.
