Eybler, Joseph Leopold, Edler Von

Eybler, Joseph Leopold, Edler Von , Austrian composer; b. Schwechat, near Vienna, Feb. 8, 1765; d. Schonbrunn, July 24, 1846. He began his musical training with his father. Settling in Vienna, he continued his studies at St. Stephen’s choir school and also received instruction from Albrechtsberger (1776–79). Haydn became his friend and mentor, and he was also befriended by Mozart. From 1794 to 1824 he was choirmaster of the Schottenkloster. He also became music teacher at the court (1801) and was named deputy Hofkapellmeister under Salieri (1804), succeeding him as Hofkapellmeister (1824). In 1833 he suffered a stroke while conducting Mozart’s Requiem and was compelled to retire. He was ennobled by the Emperor in 1835.
