La Scala, Milan, 1930–57 (début with La fanciulla del West), art. dir. 1953–7. Cond. Bayreuth (Tristan) 1939. Took Scala Co. to CG 1950. Salzburg Fest. début 1952. Frequent guest cond. of concerts and opera throughout world. Wrote 2 operas (one unfinished, the other prod. La Scala 1917), 3 sym.-poems, and other works. Retired 1957.
