De Segurola, Andrés (Perello)

De Segurola, Andrés (Perello) , Spanish bass; b. Valencia, March 27, 1874; d. Barcelona, Jan. 22, 1953. He studied with Pietro Farvaro in Barcelona, where he made his opératic debut in 1898 at the Teatro Liceo. On Oct. 10, 1901, he made his first appearance with the Metropolitan opéra in a concert during the company’s visit to Toronto, and 2 days later sang Laurent in Romeo et Juliet there; his debut with the company in N.Y. came on March 3, 1902, as the King in Aida, and he remained on its roster until the end of the season; then was again on its roster from 1909 to 1920. He later appeared in films and taught in Hollywood (1931–51) before settling in Barcelona. Among his most prominent roles were Basilio, Alvise, Varlaam, Colline, Sparafucile, and Geronte in Manon Lescaut. G. Creegan ed.
