Representing Fianna Fáil, elected to 21st Dáil for Dublin Mid-County (1977–81), the youngest member at 22; returned to 25th-28th Dáil for Clare (1987–2002) and the 29th Dáil (2002); named minister of Arts, Heritage, & Gaeltacht and the Islands (1997); member of the joint committee on Women's Rights (1987–89, 1989–92); member of European Parliament (1979–84).
