Bertini, (Benoît-) Auguste

Bertini, (Benoît-) Auguste French pianist, brother of Henri (-Jérôme) Bertini; b. Lyons, June 5, 1780; d. London, 1830. He took lessons with Clementi in London from 1793 to 1799. In 1806 he returned to Paris, where he publ. a didactic tract, Stigmatographie, ou L’Art d’écrire avec des points, suivie de la mélographie, nouvel art de noter la musique (Paris, 1812), in which he claimed to simplify musical notation. In London he publ., in 1830, another didactic pamphlet, extravagantly titled New System for Learning and acquiring extraordinary facility on all musical instruments (3rd ed., 1849).
