Addison, John (Mervyn)
Addison, John (Mervyn), English composer; b. Chobham, Surrey, March 16, 1920; d. Bennington, Vt, Dec. 7, 1998. He studied at the Royal Coll. of Music in London. Although he wrote several orch. and chamber works, he composed mainly for the theater, films, and television. Among his many film scores, particularly effective in films with epic subjects and with understated humor, were Tom Jones (1963; Academy Award), Torn Curtain (1966), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), Sleuth (1972), The Seven Per Cent Solution (1976), and Strange Invaders (1983).
