Mary Shelley's Frankenstein ★★½ Frankenstein1994 (R)

Branagh turns from Shakespeare to another form of literary classic with his operatic (and loose) adaptation of the Shelley novel. He also plays Victor, the overwrought medical student who decides that death can be vanquished and sets out to prove his theories by making a man. De Niro is sufficently grisly (though lacking in pathos) as the reanimated corpse with Bonham Carter alternately suffering and excitable as Victor's fiancee Elizabeth. Visually arresting—particularly the Creature's birth scene—pic doesn't engender audience sympathy for the characters' trials and final fates. 123m/C VHS, DVD . Kenneth Branagh, Robert De Niro, Helena Bonham-Carter, Tom Hulce, Aidan Quinn, John Cleese, Ian Holm, Richard Briers, Robert Hardy, Cherie Lunghi, Celia Imrie, Trevyn McDowell; D: Kenneth Branagh; W: Frank Darabont, Steph Lady; C: Roger Pratt; M: Patrick Doyle.
