Lan Yu (Ye) is a young architecture student, newly arrived in Beijing in 1988. He's introduced to older businessman Hangdong (Jun) and the two become lovers, though Hangdong is chronically unfaithful and they become estranged. When Lan Yu participates in the demonstrations at Tiananmen Square, Hangdong goes looking for him and the two resume their affair, which continues to be rocky.
