In a sparsely populated North Carolina community, loner Raymond Toker (Thomas) dicovers an abandoned newborn in the woods. He rescues the infant and at tempts to find the baby's parents but no one will claim her. Toker gets more and more attached to the baby when slick traveling salesman Truman Lester (Strthairn) suddenly appears in town and the child's origins are finally revealed. Hasty ending mars an otherwise notably affecting debut for director Dieckmann. 98m/C VHS, DVD .
