Genealogies of a Crime ★★ Genealogies d'un Crime 1997

Complex puzzle with the everbeautiful Deneuve in dual roles. In one role, she's Solange, a criminal lawyer who agrees to defend a young man, Rene (Poupaud), who's accused of murdering his psychologist aunt Jeanne (Deneuve again, in flashback). Jeanne, who raised Rene, long suspected him of homicidal tendencies, became his shrink, and even expected to be killed by him. Solange believes Jeanne's ministrations programmed Rene to kill. As Solange investigates Rene's background, she becomes too involved with the unstable young man—leading her down the path to madness as well. French with subtitles. 114m/C VHS, DVD .
