First a Girl
First a Girl ★★½ 1935
Delivery girl Elizabeth (Matthews) is dropping off costumes at the local theatre, which is where she meets a female impersonator with throat trouble. He gets Elizabeth to take his place on stage and she becomes famous overnight. So she keeps up the charade until a princess (Lee) and her boyfriend (Jones) become suspicious and decide to uncover the truth. If the plot sounds familiar, it's because the film was remade as “Victor/Victoria” (1982). 93m/B VHS . GB Jessie Matthews, Sonnie Hale, Anna Lee, Griffith Jones, Alfred Drayton, Martita Hunt; D: Victor Saville; W: Marjorie Gaffney; C: Glen MacWilliams.
