Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler
Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler ★★★½ Doktor Mabuse der Spieler; Dr. Mabuse, Parts 1 & 2 1922
The massive, two-part crime melodrama, introducing the raving mastermind/extortionist/villain to the world. The film follows Dr. Ma-buse (Klein-Rogge) through his life of crime until he finally goes mad. Highly influential and inventive. Lang meant this to be a criticism of morally bankrupt post-WWI Germany. Lang also directed “The Crimes of Dr. Mabuse” (1932) and “The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse” (1960). 242m/B VHS, DVD . GE Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Aud Egede Nissen, Alfred Abel, Gertrude Welcker, Lil Dagover, Paul Richter, Bernhard Goetzke; D: Fritz Lang; W: Fritz Lang, Thea von Harbou; C: Carl Hoffmann.
