Death Sentence ★½ 2007 (R)

Nick Hume (Bacon) is a suited exec with a seemingly picture-perfect life: beautiful wife (Preston), two sons, comfortable suburban digs. Out for an evening hockey game, Nick and oldest son Brendan (Lafferty) stop for gas in a seedy neighborhood and, in the blink of an eye, find themselves part of a gang initiation that ends in Brendan's brutal murder at the hands of gangbanger wannabe Joe Darly (O'Leary). Joe's caught, but Nick has his own idea of justice for Joe and his gang, and it doesn't involve a jail cell. Unfortunately the film can't decide if it wants to be a thoughtful melodrama or an overly-violent action thriller, so it misses both targets. Missed opportunities for redemption and social commentary make this just another vigilante shootem-up. 105m/C DVD . US Kevin Bacon, Garrett Hedlund, Kelly Preston, Aisha Tyler, John Goodman, Matt O'Leary, Jordan Garrett, Stuart Lafferty; D: James Wan; W: Ian Mackenzie Jeffers; C: John R. Leonetti; M: Charlie Clouser.
