The Borrowers ★★½ 1997 (PG)

Charming big-screen, big-budget tale about the little people who live under the floor. The British, elfin, and about four inch tall Clock family, headed by papa Pod (Broadbent) lives hidden in the walls of the home of the normal-sized American Lenders and exist by “borrowing” objects from their human's household. When an evil lawyer (Goodman), also American, threatens their happiness, the Borrowers bond with young Peter Lender (Pierce) who “discovers” them and volunteers to help them save their way of life. This remake focuses mainly on the impressive special effects, lending a modern look and appeal. Goodman is lovably evil in that wonderfully Snidely Whiplash way. Based on the children's books of Mary Norton. 86m/C VHS, DVD . GB John Goodman, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Mark Williams, Celia Imrie, Bradley Michael Pierce, Raymond Pickard, Aden (John) Gil-lett, Ruby Wax, Flora Newbigin, Tom Felton, Doon Mackichan; D: Peter Hewitt; W: John Kamps, Gavin Scott; C: John Fenner, Trevor Brooker; M: Harry Gregson-Williams.
