Vered, Ilana (1939—)

Israeli pianist who concertized widely in America and Europe. Born in Tel Aviv on December 6, 1939.

Ilana Vered was born in 1939 into a musical family; her mother was a concert pianist, her father a violinist. Her mother taught her until she was 13, when a government grant enabled Vered to continue her studies at the Paris Conservatoire with Vlado Perlemuter and Jeanne-Marie Darré . Subsequently, she studied with Rosina Lhévinne and Nadia Reisenberg at the Juilliard School in New York. A 1969 grant from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation made a major tour of Europe possible. By the 1970s, she had established a solid career with tours in Europe and the United States. Vered was not afraid of behaving like an old-fashioned virtuoso, yet at the same time could tame her spirits for the more delicate world of Mozart and Chopin.
