Richter, Ulrike (1959—)

East German swimmer . Born on June 17, 1959.

Won Olympic gold medals in the 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter backstroke, and the 4x100-meter medley relay in Montreal (1976); held the world record for 100-meter backstroke at 1:01.51 (1976); held the world record for the 4x100-meter relay at 4:07.95 (1976); won the World championship in the 100-meter backstroke (1973, 1975).

East Germany walked away with most of the women's gold medals in swimming in the Montreal Olympics of 1976. Ulrike Richter won the gold in the 100-meter backstroke, beating teammate Birgit Treiber and setting an Olympic record of 1:1.83. She also took the gold in the 200-meter backstroke, once again ahead of Treiber, setting another Olympic record of 2:13.43. With teammates Hannelore Anke , Andrea Pollack , and Kornelia Ender , Richter then won a team gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay.
