Patterson-Tyler, Audrey (1926–1996)

African-American runner. Name variations: Audrey Patterson. Born on September 27, 1926; died at age 69 after a heart attack in San Diego, California, in September 1996.

Audrey Patterson-Tyler was the first African-American woman to win an Olympic medal, taking the bronze in the 200 meters in the 1948 London Olympics. Following her retirement from competition, Patterson-Tyler coached more than 5,000 youths in track and field.
