Calypso (fl. c. 200 bce)

Ancient Greek painter. Name variations: Kalypso. Pronunciation: cal-up-SO or cal-IP-so. Flourished around 200 bce.

In his account of women painters, Pliny the Elder mentions the subjects of three paintings after Calypso's name; it is possible that Calypso was not a painter at all but actually the subject of a portrait by Irene . See entries on Aristarete and Irene for further background information.
