At Barcelona Olympics, won a gold medal in 470 class (1992); won World championships for 470 (1992, 1994, 1995, 1996); won European championship (1991, 1994); won a gold medal for double-handed dinghy (470) at Atlanta Olympics (1996); as a member of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, elected to 5th European Parliament (1999–2004); served as vice-chair of the Committee on Culture, Youth, Education, the Media and Sport. Named IYRU Sperry Top-Sider World Sailor of the Year (1994); awarded Grand Cross of Sporting Merit (Spain).
