Broke world record in javelin with a throw of 72.40 meters (1982); regained world record at the Helsinki World championships with a throw of 74.76 (1983); won Olympic silver medal at Los Angeles Olympics (1984), only the 2nd Finnish woman to win an Olympic medal.
