Lill, John (Richard)

Lill, John (Richard), English pianist; b. London, March 17, 1944. He studied at the Royal Coll. of Music in London (1955–64); also with Kempff in Positano. He made his debut at a concert in the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1963; was joint first prizewinner at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1970), which was the beginning of his successful international career. In 1978 he received the Order of the British Empire. While Lill’s repertoire ranges from the classics to the moderns, he has won particular distinction for his cycles of the music of Beethoven.
