Knowlton, Helen Mary (1832–1918)
American painter, art teacher, and writer. Born Aug 16, 1832, in Littleton, MA; died May 5, 1918, in Needham, MA; dau. of John Stocker Coffin Knowlton (editor and publisher) and Annie Wheeler (Hartwell) Knowlton.
Opened own studio in Boston, MA (1867); took over art class for William Morris Hunt (1871–75); exhibited paintings in Boston Museum of Fine Arts, National Academy in NY, and Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia; her major contribution to art world was defending and preserving record of Hunt, an experimental and frequently misunderstood painter. Books included Talks on Art (1875), Hints for Pupils in Drawing and Painting (1879) and Art-Life of William Morris Hunt (1899).
