Lived in Stavropol, Russia, before moving to Athens; did not begin writing until age 65; had success with 1st novel, the autobiographical Loxandra (1960), based on her experiences in Constantinople; writings, based on historial events, include Like Crazy Birds (1978), The Circle's Turnings (1982) and Vocations in the Caucasus (1985).
