Hale, Lilian Westcott (1881–1963)

American painter. Born Lilian Westcott, 1881, in Hartford, Connecticut; died 1963; sister-in-law of Ellen Day Hale (painter); studied at Hartford Art School and School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; m. Philip Leslie Hale (painter and critic); children: Nancy Hale (1908–1988, writer).

Influential member of the Boston School, exhibited in major shows throughout US; best known for her charcoal, pencil and silverpoint drawings; paintings include The Convalescent (1906) and Lavender and Old Ivory (1915), Child with Yarn (1923) and The Sailor Boy; also painted portraits, still lifes and landscapes. Won gold medal at Panama-Pacific Exhibition (1915).
